For the past couple of months food has often been a source of fear for me.  Always reading and questioning if the food contains gluten.  I don’t want to fear my food.  I want to enjoy it and have confidence that it will fuel my body not hurt it.  Thus I began researching a different way to eat and came across the Paleo diet.
Now, Paleo is a lifestyle that I heard of before and dismissed it.  Who really wants to give up gluten unless they have to?  I dismissed it because it seemed so extreme and expensive.  Well our income has not changed, yet Paleo is attainable for us.  As for being extreme, Paleo is being dairy free, grain free, legume free, and sugar free.  That is extreme to many people.  For someone who already avoid dairy and all grains except rice, it isn’t too much of a leap.  To kick start Paleo eating, I am participating in a Whole30 challenge.
What can I eat?  Meats, vegetables, and fruits.  Pictured above was my lunch, a Paleo Sweet Potato Hash.  It was very yummy and filling!  A typical breakfast for me is usually an egg of some sort, a breakfast salad (yes, I like salad in the morning), and 1/2 a grapefruit or 1/2 a banana.  Lunch is usually leftover meat from the night before with a large salad.  Dinner consists of meat (beef, chicken, pork, or fish), two vegetables, and a salad.  For snacks I have almonds and fruit.  As always, water is my drink of choice.
Thus far, I have lost 4.6lbs on the Whole30 challenge and it has only been 1 week.  I’m really excited that my moving weight gain (7lbs) is disappearing.  What changes have you made to your diet lately?

A Life in Boxes http://www.ariesmommy.com/2012/04/09/a-life-in-boxes/ http://www.ariesmommy.com/2012/04/09/a-life-in-boxes/#comments Mon, 09 Apr 2012 18:56:00 +0000 Aries Mommy http://www.ariesmommy.com/2012/04/09/a-life-in-boxes/
Sometimes we can see the finish line, other times we can only see what is in front of us.  Right now, every where I turn there are boxes.  I would love to tell you that I have been working out daily, that moving is a piece of cake.  Instead, I am here to tell you that sometimes workouts take a back seat.  It’s okay, I will be back at it tomorrow, the alarm with reminder is set on my phone.
The great thing about moving is that I get to reorganize and prioritize my life.  We purged many items before we moved.  We are currently purging even more.  This house will be a home soon.  Fingers crossed that it becomes what I in-vision and our chore plan works.  When my house is in order it is easier to workout.
I’m off to tackle the heart of the home a.k.a. my kitchen.  Tonight’s episode of Mamavation TV is sure to be full of tips for becoming more efficient in the kitchen, it is about Once a Month Cooking.

Negative 26 Bottles of….Mom! http://www.ariesmommy.com/2012/04/01/negative-26-bottles-of-mom/ http://www.ariesmommy.com/2012/04/01/negative-26-bottles-of-mom/#comments Sun, 01 Apr 2012 23:23:00 +0000 Aries Mommy http://www.ariesmommy.com/2012/04/01/negative-26-bottles-of-mom/

*Warning this post is not about weight loss and does contain some abrasive language.

Some people are afraid of spiders, some people are afraid of snakes, I am deathly afraid of bridges.  Put me on a bridge that goes into an underwater tunnel and it isn’t a pretty site.  Have you ever had a panic attack while driving?

Our drive to New York had me going over several bridges, my plan of action is to drive in a center lane. That way the water isn’t usually in my view.  Deep breathing and just focusing on the car in front of me, can usually keep me from panicking.  At dinner I told my husband that I was proud of myself for making it over the bridges while driving (we were both driving our own cars).  He asked if I knew about the bridge coming up.  That should have been my first warning.  Damn him!  I am pretty sure he just wanted to experience this bridge, which is why we didn’t go through DC.

Not to much later I found myself at a toll booth, ahead of my husband.  Actually, he was behind me because the silly man went to an e-pass lane and had to back up.  The sign said bridge tunnel $12!  Seriously, they made me pay to face a huge fear.  With shaky hands I gave the toll man my money and asked how bad the bridge was, as well as if I could pull aside and wait for my husband.  Apparently he got the feeling that I was not okay with this.  He even asked my husband if I was okay to drive.  Guess I don’t hide panic very well.

Not seeing water is very difficult on this bridge.  All I knew was that having a full on panic attack was not an option.  If at all possible I wanted to avoid scarring two of my children for life.  So, what is a mom forced to face her fear do?  She starts to sing a song to distract her brain.  We started with, “If you are happy and you know it,” however, I was stumped as how to stomp my feet and drive at the same time.  Thus that lasted only two verses.  Then it clicked, what is one song that can keep going on and on, one that would be easy for the kids to pick up on and sing with instead of pointing out to sea?  99 bottles of beer on the wall!  Yes, that was what we needed.  Zack questioned my choice in songs as he didn’t think a seven year old should sing about beer.  My little copilot, Felicia, quickly hushed him and said just sing really loud.

Facing a fear is not easy.  I thought that going in the tunnel would be easier on me.  Um no!  Knowing that I was now under the water that the bridge was over made me want to panic even more.  I am pretty sure that sh!t and f&^% came out of my mouth.  Followed quickly by a deep breath and on to the next slow round of our song.  Slow because I needed to keep breathing or we might have to stop and get someone else to drive us.  Hell, I would probably have needed to be sedated if it was light out.  We reached negative 26 bottles of beer on the wall by the time we were on land.

It took amount for me to realize that we were on solid land, a good hour before my heart stopped feeling as though it would jump out of my chest.  Felicia thought that “handing out” all that beer is exhausting and vowed not to be a bartender.  Zachary thanked God that we made it out alive (I am pretty sure he lost all confidence that I could drive over a bridge).  Once my thoughts were in order, all I could think was my ass of a husband made me pay $12 to almost have a panic attack and scare the crap out of our kids.

He is afraid of snakes, does anyone have some I can borrow?

*The pictures are two views of the bridge tunnel.  It is a series of three bridges and two tunnel that span 23 miles. Just looking at those pictures makes my heart race. Seriously, who has some snakes I can put in my husband’s car?

Enjoy when you can, and endure when you must. -Johann Wolfgang von Goethe

Have you ever had something weigh on your mind that really should not be such a big deal?  The past week I couldn’t decide if I wanted the movers to pack my scale (thus living without it for up to 3 months), or if I should take it in the car with me.  Can a person who is trying to trim down live without their scale?
This journey has not been about the number on the scale for me.  It is about the reflection in the mirror, the size of pants that I wear (how well those pants fit), and of course getting into an actual bikini.  Yet, the scale is often the focus of my journey.  So, why is it so difficult to tell the movers to pack it?
Ultimately, it is a tool that I use and am familiar with.  It keeps me accountable when it comes to my food.  Thus, I decided to take it with me, and keep weighing in weekly.  Now wish me luck on surviving with very few kitchen gadgets.
Don’t forget to enter the Omron Prize Pack Giveaway!!  It ends this Friday!

We seek peace, knowing that peace is the climate of freedom. -Dwight D. Eisenhower

Watching the waves always brings me peace.  Maybe it is the soothing sound, or the endless blue ocean. Whatever it is, the ocean has a calming effect on me.  This past weekend we took a mini vacation to Myrtle Beach.  Of course, that gave me an opportunity to meet a sista in real life!  Heather (@NotDIYHeather) is so sweet and helped me to get in half my steps on Saturday.  I had a great time getting to know her and walking around the boardwalk.  Hopefully my wild bunch family didn’t scare her.
This weekend was our calm before the storm.  This move has my head spinning, I am working really hard to focus on not emo eating.  My workouts help to deal with the stress, and an evening walk with a friend allows me to vent.  This move is not going to deter my weight loss and fitness goals.

Bob Greene Interview and a Giveaway! http://www.ariesmommy.com/2012/03/12/bob-greene-interview-and-a-giveaway/ http://www.ariesmommy.com/2012/03/12/bob-greene-interview-and-a-giveaway/#comments Mon, 12 Mar 2012 13:43:00 +0000 Aries Mommy http://www.ariesmommy.com/2012/03/12/bob-greene-interview-and-a-giveaway/      The Omron Campaign is coming to an end.  The past month I had the opportunity to not only count my steps, but to watch my heart rate.  As many of you know, wearing a pedometer is something that I have been doing since July of 2011.  However, it wasn’t until this campaign that I monitored my heart rate during workouts.  It is awesome to see how many calories burned and how quickly I am recovering from workouts and runs.  Using the pedometer and the heart rate monitor help me to see when I need to move more and when I need to increase the intensity.  These are two tools that I will continue to use during  my weight loss journey.  Speaking of my weight loss, during this campaign I lost 3.8lbs!
Last week I had the opportunity to interview Bob Greene!  He is a wealth of knowledge, narrowing the questions to ask him was quite the task!  Here is a summary of our conversation.
Shannon:  What is the most underrated exercise?
Bob Greene:  Walking, it is anywhere you are.  You can accomplish it in almost any climate.  It is low impact.  We were built to walk.
Shannon:  In your experience what has a larger impact on weight loss food or exercise?
Bob Greene:  Start with exercise, it builds a calorie burning machine. Both are equally important. It puts a cap on how much weight you can gain.  The food is where you will earn your results.  You can fine tune your eating gradually.  I’m always in an evolution, constantly improving my eating.
Shannon:  Are you planning on adding more foods with the Best Life seal and are you planning on adding any gluten free foods?
Bob Greene:  I just had a meeting yesterday about implementing our plan for Best Life Foods.  I didn’t set out to set up a food company.  It was really about addressing problems, that is why we started with spreads.  It was one of the biggest calorie and health issues on the planet.  Now we are looking at some of the problem areas, snacks is one of them.  The parent company, GFA, who now owns Best Life Foods is acquiring a gluten free company
Shannon:  Juicing seems popular again.  Are you losing the benefits that you get with eating whole fruits and vegetables, such as fiber when you juice?
Bob Greene:  There are different levels of juicing.   The ones that do not maintain the fiber produce a thinner juice and you are losing fiber and nutritional value.  The ones that maintain the fiber produce a thicker juice.  We are very fiber deficient.   The best of both worlds is adding the juice to soups.  Juicing is a great drink replacement.

You must welcome change as the rule but not as your ruler. -Denis Waitley
Carrots?  Change?  Oh wait, C is for Celiac.  The news results that I was waiting for came on Friday.  Minutes before a lunch date with friends, my doctor called to tell me that I do have Celiac Disease.   For a split second I was happy that there was finally an answer to my issues.  Then it hit me that my life was going to drastically change.  So, I cried and reached out on Facebook to a group of women who show more support than I could ever ask for.
My family is currently going through an adjustment period.  We are in the process of purging all gluten from the house.  I spent a lot of time on this week’s meal plan adjusting recipes to be gluten free and looking for new recipes to try.  The menu focuses on foods that are natural gluten free, just like items are marketed and marked up as healthy, the items marketed as gluten free tend to cost more.  I can live without that $5-$8 loaf of gluten free bread; lettuce wraps suit me just fine.
There is a lot of comfort in knowing that I am not alone in this.  There are so many resources for those with Celiac.  I am not the first person to be diagnosed and I will not be the last.  Just tweeting with Alysa and all of my Mamavation sistas helped me to not feel so alone and scared.  Change can be scary, having others to help guide me gives me hope.
QOW:  What is your favorite workout to get the heart pumping?

My favorite workout to get my heart pumping is running.  No matter how the run starts at the end I feel like I accomplished something huge.  Some say the hardest part is getting your shoes on.  I think the first step is the hardest (I could totally run barefoot).
What is your least favorite workout?  A group step class is mine, I don’t think my pride ever recovered from the faceplant ;)

Getting Fit with Omron http://www.ariesmommy.com/2012/03/01/getting-fit-with-omron/ http://www.ariesmommy.com/2012/03/01/getting-fit-with-omron/#comments Thu, 01 Mar 2012 15:30:00 +0000 Aries Mommy http://www.ariesmommy.com/2012/03/01/getting-fit-with-omron/

The way I think about fitness and eating changed almost nine months ago.  I was given many tools to assist me in weight loss throughout my campaign as  Mamavation mom.  One of my favorite tools is a pedometer.  This particular pedometer I have had for about a month, it was given to me as part of the Omron Blogger Campaign.

The Omron HJ-112 is a pocket pedometer.  It can be placed horizontally or vertically.  The pedometer will track steps from your pocket, waistband, and even your purse.  The plastic clip can break if clipped to a wide belt or waistband, Omron will replace the clip if that happens.  The Omron HJ-112 was rated #1 by Consumer Reports for over ten years, recently it moved to the #2 spot.  I love that it stores my step count for seven days, for the times that I forget to input the days steps into my tracking log.

My daily goal is a minimum of 10,000 steps, with at least half being aerobic steps.  Reaching 10,000 steps in one day has not ever happened by accident, at least for me.  My regular mom and wife duties usually have me at 2,000-6,000 steps.  To get to 10,000 steps, I usually go for an evening walk or run.  Saturdays are usually my high step count day, as I begin the day by getting all 10,000 steps in one long run/walk. I know that my weight loss would not be the number it is, if I didn’t track my daily steps.

Omron has some exciting things in store over the next few weeks.  I will be interviewing Bob Greene, courtesy of this campaign!  Watch for my post about the interview and see what other surprises Omron has in store! Starting March 5th – April 1st the OmronFitness Facebook Page will be giving away gift cards, a variety of Omron products, Bob Greene autographed books, and the grand prize four day, three night stay for two at the Canyon Ranch Spa in Tucson, Arizona.  Who wouldn’t want a spa vacation?

You can follow my daily movement as well as the other bloggers in this campaign on twitter via the #fitwithomron hashtag.  Just remember some movement is better than no movement.  10,000 steps (about 5 miles) is recommended for weight loss.  How do you get more movement into your day?

Outcome, Action, or Both? http://www.ariesmommy.com/2012/02/27/outcome-action-or-both/ http://www.ariesmommy.com/2012/02/27/outcome-action-or-both/#comments Mon, 27 Feb 2012 20:31:00 +0000 Aries Mommy http://www.ariesmommy.com/2012/02/27/outcome-action-or-both/ Finish Line

Life is full of obstacle illusions -Grant Frazier
Have you ever noticed that there are two types of goals?  There are outcome goals, such as wanting to lose X amount of pounds.  Then there are action goals, such as working out Y number of minutes each week.  When setting goals, I like to have a healthy mix of both.
My weight loss goal is not a number on the scale.  It is a pant size, more accurately a bikini fit body. However, lately my focus has been on the weekly number the scale gives me.  Focusing on the wrong outcome goal has inhibited my progress.  My pant size has not decreased in a couple of months.  Starting next Monday you will notice a small change, my scale picture will no longer be shown.  However, I will still be weighing in weekly and adding it to my Weight Loss Progress Page.  The graph really puts my weight loss into perspective.
The scale and my bikini are outcome goals.  It is the daily action goals that will get me to where I want to be.  For the most part, my action goals have been set for me.  As a Mamavation mentor, the workouts that I complete daily have been designed for us all.  So, I just have to make sure that I do them.  My nutritional goals are 100% in my own hands.  The past few weeks food has not been my fuel, it has been the source of immense physical pain.  I am hopeful that the tests my doctor ran today will shed some light on what is going on.  Then I can move forward and begin to look at food as fuel again.
What kind of goals do you set?  Are you purely motivated by the outcome you wish to achieve?  Or do you need the action goals as a road map?  Maybe you are like me, and like a mixture of both.  Whatever your goals may be, I hope that you are able to achieve them.
QOW:  What steps have you made so far this year to improve your quality of life?

I am making an effort to allow less things to stress me out.  My husband has always told me to worry less, yet just turning off worry wasn’t easy.  Now if I start to worry or feel stressed I go out for a walk or run.  Begin relaxed feels one million times better than stressing out over nothing.
